This is what the entryway looked like before we did the demoltion. The original bannister had been destroyed years earlier and replaced with a salvage rail. Slate was cemented to the original pine floor just in front of the door. The rest was bare wood, badly warped and stained, that was hidden by heavy-duty carpet. |
The floor was removed, new (level!) joists sistered onto the originals and a subfloor laid to take the ceramic tiles. A new oak bannister, newell post and stair treads were added. New sheetrock, with insulation, finished up before paint and paper. The ceiling got embossed wallpaper which looks very much like a tin ceiling. |

Here's the old stairs with the bannister removed and the new sheetrock in place. Externally mounted lightswitches have been relocated and recessed. |
A view of the almost finished project. The new flat style ballisters will all receive a colorful stencil. |

Another view of the demolition of the entranceway. The bannister is already removed. |
Almost completely finished entryway. Sheetrock, painting and new oak stair treads and bannister (with a home-made oak newell post) finish it up. |
